It’s time for moderate Muslims to clean house

Instead of confronting this evil, we’ve hidden it in plain sight.
It’s time for moderate Muslims to clean house. There is a viper in the midst of the Muslim faith, and—despite years upon years of horrific acts of violence culminating in the atrocity at Fort Hood last week—the moderate Muslim community in America and around the globe has done little or nothing to stamp it out.
Instead, they (and the politically correct class in America) have collectively hidden behind the notion that Islam is a “religion of peace.” I have no doubt that is true for the great majority of Muslims, but it is clearly not true for the radical Jihadists running amuk. In their twisted view, it is the Koran itself that compels followers of Allah to behead the infidels—and pour tar down their severed throats for good measure.
Now is the time to ask: What responsibility do moderate Muslims bear for allowing this sort of sickness to fester? Judging by their reaction to the Fort Hood Massacre, the media and the chatter-boxes on TV seem to think the answer is none—but they were singing a different tune when another of the world’s leading religions was under fire. Back when a few Catholic priests were preying on little girls and boys, no one hesitated to assign the blame, take the Pope to task, and demand he clean house.
What is different now except for the threat being even greater and more widespread? The terrorist du jour, Nidal Malik Hasan, began his journey towards radicalization at a Mosque in Falls Church, VA, less than an hour outside the US capital. Early in his indoctrination, he sat side-by-side with two of the 9-11 hijackers and received religious instruction by a key Al Queda leader who’s since fled to Yemen.
Does anyone seriously believe that none of the more moderate Mosque attendees had any idea what was going on there? This didn’t happen at some terrorist training camp in a remote Afghani village. It happened—and indeed is happening—right under our noses in the suburban United States, and yet no one with any authority or influence seems to know or care.
Just yesterday, President Obama told the nation that Hasan’s rampage in the name of God was “incomprehensible,” and that the “twisted logic that led to the tragedy may be too hard to comprehend.” He went on to explain that “no faith justifies these murderous and craven acts.”
Except it is easy to comprehend in a world where lunatics threaten violence over a Danish cartoon, and one faith does justify these atrocities on a daily basis. In fact, the twelfth slide of a presentation Hasan himself delivered in public at Walter Reed cited the Koranic sanctions for killing infidels. In case you missed that, slide 43 of the same presentation contains the “Verse of the Sword” where one is “commanded to fight the people” until they embrace Allah.
What more does Obama need to understand what’s going on here? There is a breed of Islam that is violent at its core. This is not my conclusion. This is what the Islamic radicals themselves say about their own religion, and this is the faith they use to justify their terrorist atrocities on their way to establishing a world-wide Caliphate that operates under Islamic law.
Why do we continually and collectively refuse to take Bin Laden and his murderous ilk at their word when the end result is obvious? We have provided nothing but cover for moderate Muslims to overlook the heinous crimes of their brethren. Instead of confronting this evil, we’ve hidden it in plain sight by applying no pressure on Islam to clean its own house.
If we have any hope of winning this war, Muslims themselves must slay their own serpent.
